House of Sampoerna
House of Sampoerna is arguably the top tourist attraction in Surabaya city. It's a museum, gift shop, cafe, and most importantly a cigarette factory all into one (do note that the cigarette factory doesn't operate on weekends).
The building was previously used as an orphanage managed by the Dutch. It was later purchased in 1932 by Liem Seeng Tee, the founder of Sampoerna. It was the site of Sampoerna's first major cigarette production facility.
Features of House of Sampoerna
- MUSEUM: Here, you can go on a tour of the beautifully decorated past of the House of Sampoerna. Discover the story of the founding family and the development of Sampoerna's businesses. You are also able to observe a real hand-rolled production facility with more than 400 women hand-rolling cigarettes at a speed of more than 325 cigarettes per hour (note that this operation doesn't function on weekends)
- KIOSK: Souvenirs galore! You are able to purchase gifts for your loved ones or even yourself! There are items such as t-shirts, mugs, ashtrays, jackets, bag, hat and many more!
- CAFÉ: The café is tastefully designed by incorporating a touch of artsy decoration‚ a splash of wild creativity with a dash of history. With all these factors, you will definitely be awed by their culinary experience. There is a wide selection of Western and Asian cuisines that cater to all tastebuds. On selected evenings‚ there are also live music performances to enhance your dining experience.
- ART GALLERY: The Art Gallery displays several rotating series of exhibits representing the works some of Indonesia's finest artists as well as up-and-coming artists. It will present both works “on loan” as well as those that are for sale
At the entrance of the museum, you can engage a highly informative English-speaking guide. The complete walking tour will last in between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your involvement with the guide. Do take note that although the museum is open till much later, the factory section which produces the cigarettes closes at 3pm.
Best Time to Visit
It’s best to drop by in the morning and early afternoon (before 3pm) so that you can witness the workers rolling the cigarettes manually by hand. In addition, avoid the weekends as they are more crowded and the production facility doesn't operate (you can't witness the manual cigarette-rolling process by the hundreds of workers).
From Surabaya’s city centre at World Trade Centre Surabaya, it takes at least 20 minutes’ drive (7km).
The most convenient way to visit the House of Sampoerna is to join Surabaya’s “Heritage Track Tour”. Here, you will be joining a tour where there will be other travellers as well. The uniqueness of the bus is that it is design like a tram. The starting point of the tour will be from House of Sampoerna itself. The best part of this tour is that it is COMPLIMENTARY!
